We need to talk about Rick Cooper

Primal Need #4: Connection & Love

This is most middle-aged men:

Sat on the sofa after a long and tiring day at work.

Kids in bed.

House quieter than a politician who's been told they can only speak the truth.

Belly full from dinner.

Watching TV whilst scrolling.

(Who said men can't multitask?)

Now let me ask you, on a deeper level.

Why are they watching two screens at once?

Well?...

Because they are desperate to feel something.

That right, there is the 'Fourth primal need'.

And over the last few weeks we’ve covered certainty.

We’ve covered uncertainty.

We’ve covered significance.

And I've had messages like below from guys that said it all landed heavily.

But here’s the one most men won’t admit they’re starving for:

Love.

And by that I mean...

Connection to someone.

Something like a mission, a brotherhood.

Connection to a version of themselves they respect.

Without it, you can have money and boats and cars and fucking jets coming out your arse.

You can have status.

And still feel empty.

And this is why I've said before...

Some of the richest men I have met are the most LOST.

Think of it this way

Most men who are DOING WELL don’t lack success.

Far from it.

But it's something that hurts a bit to admit.

They lack depth.

We were never taught how to connect without armour on.

So we connect through:

- Banter with other men

- Competition with other blokes or people online we'll never meet

- Arguments with men at football stadiums about footballers who dont even know you exist and probably wouldn't even want to be associated with you

- Work deadlines and common challenges in the office

- Football for 90 minutes until you are blowing out your arse but truly knackered and a bit muddy

- The gym where you can still eye up the women with the arse like a little peach and STILL lift some weights and feel good

Fuck it - Even aggression can be connection.

Two men pushing each other hard in training.

A heated debate that wakes something up inside you.

That’s still bonding.

It’s intense, yes...

...but we need this kind of thing in our lives so we don't end up like pathetic weak spineless weasels voting for yet another diabolical political Party...

...and crying in our cup of soy that someone online got our pronouns wrong even though we are identifying as a depressed cat this week anyway.

Meow.

I can tell you this with certainty after so many years working in a 95% male dominated environment in the City.

Intensity is often the only emotional language men feel safe speaking.

Even Carl Jung talked about the shadow — the parts of us we suppress.

For many men, vulnerability sits IN that shadow.

So instead of saying:

“I feel lost.”

We say:

“Fancy a run?”

Instead of:

“I need direction.”

We say:

“Let’s build something.”

It’s coded language to some extent when you see it...but underneath it all?

We want to be seen.

And this is why the Adventure Experience in 2024 surprised a lot of guys.

Men came expecting strategy.

Fitness.

A reset.

What they didn’t expect was connection.

And Rick Cooper was a huge part of that.

He's an infectious human being.

Not in a loud, performative way.

In a grounded, steady, fire-in-the-belly way.

Former London Fire Service officer.
Rugby player.
GB athlete.
NLP Master Coach.
Strength coach.

He’s operated in high pressure environments most men only watch on TV whilst eating crisps.

But here’s what makes him rare as fuck.

He’s equally comfortable in the quiet, uncomfortable space of a man facing his own fear.

That’s connection.

So you could say he has presence.

or said in a less wanky way:

He has this ability to challenge you without shaming you.

To look you in the eye and call you forward.

Not out (there’s a difference).

And men feel that, and they appreciate it.

The #1 Blocker: Fear

Rick talks openly about the real performance blocker so many men struggle from.

Fear of stepping beyond the feel good identity you’ve built after years of the same old same old.

Fear of being judged by a bunch of twats online who haven't got a clue who you are or what you stand for.

Fear of losing what you’ve created and the family wondering what the fuck you've done.

Fear of admitting you want more when everyone around you seems content with a mundane existence.

But watch this:

When a man feels safe enough to face that?

Connection happens, with himself first, then with others.

Wife, Kids, Parents Family, Colleagues, Friends.

Now lets go a level deeper

Connection and love anchor to one core value:

Brotherhood.

But let's go deeper still.

Beneath brotherhood is...

Belonging.

Men thrive when they feel part of something.

A group, a tribe, a team.

A shared standard.

A room where you don’t have to pretend (because it's bloody exhausting).

That’s why the Adventure Experience matters.

(The next one is 9-10th May)

It’s not a seminar or a motivational weekend in the Cotswolds.

It’s a deliberate collision of ambitious men who are done drifting.

Several guys have already snapped up spaces.

One worked for Aston Martin, another works for Rolls Royce, and others own their now businesses.

They are all looking for more...Strength. Success. Direction.

But they know that means nothing without Connection.

You can build muscle alone, yes.

You can make money alone, deffo.

But you cannot evolve alone.

Not properly.

And that's why Rick is the perfect co-host with me for the event.

He’s done the high-performance life.

He’s done the pressure.

What he brings now is integration and steadiness.

He can challenge you enough to put a bit of fire in your belly.

Masculine energy that builds rather than destroys.

And when men spend time around that?

Something shifts.

Not because he tells them what to do, but because he reminds them who they are.

If todays Journal speaks to you...

But you feel quietly disconnected from yourself, your life, or your direction...

Then maybe the need you’re ignoring isn’t more certainty or more success.

It’s connection.

And the right room changes everything.

Hmmm... Most of the advice aimed at 'ambitious' men says roughly the same thing. Keep pushing for the result you want. Never stop pursuing you dreams. Rest when you’re dead, Mofo. And most of the time, I agree with it to some extent. I mean... I love it when a guy has an attitude where he makes things happen, he is prepared to work hard, to put in the hours to create the opportunities he needs. There's loads of those guys in the membership, either Spark, Network, or Nexus. So I'm all for...

Be honest. Do you love what you do for your career? In fact.. for some...another question would be... ...do you even LIKE it? Now I reckon... ...about 5% will say they love what they do. ...maybe 30% will 'like' what they do ...and the rest are in the lower categories of 'it's ok'. or ' I can't stand it'. I've been in all those categories before, so wherever you stand I'm with you. But on Friday I saw a great example of something we should all be impressed with. I was at the Horse of the year...

I have a deep rooted memory of being out in Turkey on holiday as a kid. My family at some old town market haggling with men over a handbag or wallet or something. They give you some nice Turkish tea and you settle in for a short bartering session that seemed to last for hours. All for the sake of some leather and a few quid discount. For some reason I just hated it. On reflection it's because, as a kid you have zero interest in pissing about in some little market that smells like a camels....
