He's 71 but can run rings around most men

Be honest.

Do you love what you do for your career?

In fact.. for some...another question would be...

...do you even LIKE it?

Now I reckon...

...about 5% will say they love what they do.

...maybe 30% will 'like' what they do

...and the rest are in the lower categories of 'it's ok'. or ' I can't stand it'.

I've been in all those categories before, so wherever you stand I'm with you.

But on Friday I saw a great example of something we should all be impressed with.

I was at the Horse of the year Show at the NEC in Birmingham.

And one of the competitors was a legendary Show Jumper...

a man called John Whittaker.

Now, if you have zero interest in horses and showjumping, don't worry.

This is worth considering.

John Whittaker is about as close to a national treasure as British show jumping has.

He’s a Yorkshireman from a farming family near Huddersfield, born in 1955, so he’s 71 now.

Yes, 71.

And he's still competing at the very highest level against men in their 20s, 30s, 40s.

I can't tell you how much motivation, focus, determination, that must take.

Can you imagine Ronaldo playing for Real Madrid at 71?

Or Anthony Joshua still fighting at 71?

(Although as Elite boxing seems to be a total circus now, maybe he will be).

Now, John has won pretty much everything there is.

He was in the Olympics back in 1984.

I was only 6 then!

So he's got nothing to prove.

He keeps on coming back year after year because he loves what he does.

but here's not just there to make up the numbers.

It's the attitude...

'I CAN STILL WIN ON THE DAY'.

Imagine carrying that level of mindset when most men of 71 have got some slippers and pipe and are too busy watching Dancing on Ice.

I also thought about how Mastery Compounds.

He's got better and better over the years.

So if you sometimes wonder if you are 'past it' at nearly 50... you're wrong!

And my last observation, is that I watched John stride around the course before the event, marking out the spaces between huge jumps....

...with a smile on his face, but still taking it seriously.

What joy to be involved with work you love, instead of it being a chore, at any age.

Talking of work...

Another one of the guys in The Network has secured a new job.

He was in a role that wasn't exactly lighting him up, and he's now been offered a position that is good working hours, and also some extra bunce... a result all round.

Catch you Wednesday.

Hmmm... Most of the advice aimed at 'ambitious' men says roughly the same thing. Keep pushing for the result you want. Never stop pursuing you dreams. Rest when you’re dead, Mofo. And most of the time, I agree with it to some extent. I mean... I love it when a guy has an attitude where he makes things happen, he is prepared to work hard, to put in the hours to create the opportunities he needs. There's loads of those guys in the membership, either Spark, Network, or Nexus. So I'm all for...

I have a deep rooted memory of being out in Turkey on holiday as a kid. My family at some old town market haggling with men over a handbag or wallet or something. They give you some nice Turkish tea and you settle in for a short bartering session that seemed to last for hours. All for the sake of some leather and a few quid discount. For some reason I just hated it. On reflection it's because, as a kid you have zero interest in pissing about in some little market that smells like a camels....

I'd like to think we all take our health seriously. ...but the older I get the more I see it's WAYYY down the list of priorities for a lot of people. that is... until you get sick, and then it's the NUMBER ONE priority. So last week I was away on holiday with the family. We went to Turkey as it would be perfect for our situation. Warm and sunny and about 80oC every day. Not too expensive as it's in term time for schools. Lovely clean beach and hotel. Plenty of activities for the kids. During...
