The trap ambitious men fall into in their 40s

It was July 2025.

I was on a call with a guy when he said something that will resonate with a lot of guys reading this who are ambitious but middle-aged.

Before I tell you what he said...let me set the scene.

He earns decent money.

He has a 4 bed house with nice garden (and a sundeck - ooh)

Wife of about 8 years, and one child (toddler)

He said something that stuck with me (and I had heard over and over again from other middle-aged men)

'Nothing's wrong but I'm a bit bored of my own life.'

It's always the usual stuff.

Same mornings for 10 years.

Commute that's unchanged and monotonous.

Same desk facing a window and a wall but under artificial light.

Weekends of shopping, chores, sometimes a 5km ParkRun or gym, and doing family stuff.

And the odd bit of DIY but he was shit at it and would rather pay someone than fuck it up himself and take 3 hours to hang some curtains.

This all lands, and I know it will for a shitload of you.

And whilst his body wasn't tired, it was in fact his brain that was starving.

Let me explain.

What blokes don’t realise is that we’re wired to NEED uncertainty and variety.

This of course is a mind fuck...

...because you would be right in thinking...

'Hang on Ant, last week you said we need CERTAINTY, and now you're saying we need UNCERTAINTY?'

CORRECTAMUNDO.

And I don't mean we need loads of chaos and loads of drama (we have women in our lives for that)...

...but we need a change of state.

Your nervous system releases dopamine when something is new, challenging, unfamiliar.

That can come from lots of way, but examples being a new environment, from physically moving your arse, or even new conversations.

It wakes you up from the unconscious patterns we get stuck in as men...

...especially after 10-20-30 years doing the same old same old.

What became clear to me after years of conversations with men is that ...

...when life becomes entirely predictable, motivation drops.

There's a dip in your mood.

Focus goes awol.

And this is a good reason why men who are successful can still feel flat.

Issues then slowly arise because when we don't get the healthy variety that we need.

We chase CHEAP variety like food, booze, scrolling, porn and anything else you can think of.

Quick stimulation = Long regret

There’s a deeper reason most men stay stuck in routines they hate.

Your brain is built to keep you SAFE, not fulfilled.

It resists change even when the current life is draining you.

Familiar feels secure, even when it’s slowly suffocating the life out of you.

This is why stepping into something unfamiliar is so powerful (and yes it's daunting).

But we are men and this is why we have balls.

We need to look for challenges and change.

A new place and some movement.

Mental and physical Challenge.

Men who think differently and help us grow because they offer new perspectives.

And what happens?

Your system resets.

This is exactly why The Adventurer works.

Not because it’s a 'nice weekend away with Anthony and the guys'.

Because it breaks autopilot for 48 hours.

It gives your brain the uncertainty it craves, your body the movement it needs, and your mind the clarity it’s been missing.

And good food.

So you might assume men come back relaxed, which sounds good as they need it...

...but they come back switched on AFTER relaxing.

Clearer and more driven.

Or put another way: Alive again.

So if you've been craving a state change, it happens when you step out the life you've become numb to.

I'm certain men need uncertainty to grow and win and succeed.

Good to think about.

Have a great weekend brother.

Hmmm... Most of the advice aimed at 'ambitious' men says roughly the same thing. Keep pushing for the result you want. Never stop pursuing you dreams. Rest when you’re dead, Mofo. And most of the time, I agree with it to some extent. I mean... I love it when a guy has an attitude where he makes things happen, he is prepared to work hard, to put in the hours to create the opportunities he needs. There's loads of those guys in the membership, either Spark, Network, or Nexus. So I'm all for...

Be honest. Do you love what you do for your career? In fact.. for some...another question would be... ...do you even LIKE it? Now I reckon... ...about 5% will say they love what they do. ...maybe 30% will 'like' what they do ...and the rest are in the lower categories of 'it's ok'. or ' I can't stand it'. I've been in all those categories before, so wherever you stand I'm with you. But on Friday I saw a great example of something we should all be impressed with. I was at the Horse of the year...

I have a deep rooted memory of being out in Turkey on holiday as a kid. My family at some old town market haggling with men over a handbag or wallet or something. They give you some nice Turkish tea and you settle in for a short bartering session that seemed to last for hours. All for the sake of some leather and a few quid discount. For some reason I just hated it. On reflection it's because, as a kid you have zero interest in pissing about in some little market that smells like a camels....
